Atopia was engaged by the Kennedy Center to develop a one-year-long temporary light installation in their reflecting pool: a mirrored surface, four inches below the surface of the water, dotted with hand-blown glass orbs containing heavily modified RGB yacht taillights.
Design Objective: implement remotely schedule-able algorithmic light compositions, with an on-site bypass for performances and events.
Challenge
The solution was a remotely accessible Max application slaved to a custom implementation of the ZCast content management system.
DMX signals were sent directly to the fixtures from a locally installed computer. I conceived and helped implement a bespoke previsualization tool for pre-design and real-time monitoring.
